Currently, Account Schedules are limited to static captions such as "Current Period" or "Prior Period"
The reports would be more readable if the Column Captions could be "smart" and display either the Date Filter being applied to the column or resolve to the Month / Period caption via Accounting Periods.

It would be extra helpful to have Dimension values as a column set where the column set automatically expands when a new dimension is added.

Agree. They should make it like the G/L Balance by Dimension matrix.
The ‘Show as columns’ and ‘Matrix Options’ are a lot easier to use.

Yes, it woudl be perfect if there wasa column type called Period which could be for the Financial Year. Having the column option set to allow for Day, Week, Month Quater, Year - like what is allowed on the Analysis Views.
The date filter would be used to restrict the periods shown rather than filtering the Account Schedule column.
This would then have the option to create a Actual, Budget and Variance columns simply and have the Account Schedule default the columns to the current year.
