Report Extensions are something many want but may be technically challenging. How about introducing a set of user defined fields on certain tables (or all) which can be populated as the client wishes via customer extensions. These fields can then be exposed in the dataset and used if required. This would at least be an option to get around the current inability to add custom/additional fields to a dataset.

In all honesty, when it comes to report datasets, users should be able to add any field that exists in the datasets tables - especially for master tables. It shouldn't take a developper to add table fields to a report dataset.

I agree with this as well. There are major reporting shortfalls in BC, especially when it comes to customization. Good idea.
