Business Central needs a G/ledger enquiry screen just like Great Plains has ("Summary Enquiry"), where you can enter the account & dimensions you whish to enquire on and it show the summary view first (with debit/credit/net change for all 12 months of the year plus YTD each month down the last column.
Then when you click on a period you can go into detailed G/L transactions for that period and can drill down all the way to source documents.
The Great Plains version of this G/L enquiry screen is the best my team has used in all their experiences
and it is a shame BC does not have this

Good suggestion. We can definitely make some improvements.
For now you can use G/L Balance by Dimension:
Chart of Accounts > Navigate > Account > Balance By Dimensions
Set the parameters and you can get a periodic overview/summary filtered by account(s) and dimension(s)
[select Reverse lines and columns; set view by = Month]
Since it's G/L, it's limited to the 2 global dimensions. If you want to focus on any dimension you need to use Analysis Views.
