Currently an Event Check-In record can only be created if you know the Registration ID for the attendee. This means the user needs to export a spreadsheet with all the Registration records, search that by the attendees name and find that persons Registration ID before they can check them in, which is rubbish The system needs to allow us to search Registration records by the linked Contacts name

Brendan, we released easier check-in as part of the October 2018 release.  Does this address your ask?  If not, could you please provide more specifics so that we can fine-tune the feature?

I think what OP means is this:
If you go to "Registration and attendance" --> Click "New Check-in" --> Select "Event registration" and hit enter in the search field, you will get a list of registration IDs. Which makes no sense for a human being.

There's a 'Session Code' field that we can add to the form which has a barcode scanner custom control. So if you use the D365 mobile app and open a Check-In form, it will allow you to scan the customer's barcode. I had to add a JavaScript though, to populate the Registration ID lookup based on the resulting barcode text.
