The ATO (Australian Tax Office) is moving slowly from lodging BASs by form (they hate this) to online Portal (a little time consuming) to an automated lodgement from within the accounting software (as part of their Standard Business Reporting) processes.

The tax office have noted the attached link with software designers who have already created SBR tools within their software. They expect this list to grow quickly given the push by the ATO to use this form of lodgement.

Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

The following reporting obligations have been included in products that are SBR-enabled:

They key ones are things like:

  • Business activity statement

  • Fringe Benefits Tax Returns (FBT)

  • PayG

The only comment the ATO made was to ensure that we are considering this with the new software provider, as the long term is that the ATO will be pushing for more online automation over time, and this could be a substantial enhancement if we could get it implemented.

This is useful for Australian market for integration with local tax authority ATO. As of today we can only generate the Australian BAS and the E-BAS.

The Fringe Benefits Tax Returns (FBT) does not follow Australian Financial Year either, it's dates are from 1st April to 31 March.

Currently this has to be achieved by running the Ledger Transaction List report twice for the two financial years otherwise you receive the error message "dates must in the same financial year" which is time consuming.
