In some circumstances we want to treat different variants of an item for warehousing purposes however all the field that link into how that item is handled in the warehouse are at released product level. Having product filter codes at variant level would allow for definition of different pick and put rules for different variants and adding packsize category ID would allow for definition of different stocking limits by product variant without having to add a new record in the stocking limits table for every product variant.
One example of this is a customer who sells T-shirts with sizes ranging from XS to XXL. The XXXL T-Shirts are a different size to the XS T-Shirts, are so there are different stocking limits. Both the XS and the XXXL T-Shirts are slower movers than the Small, Medium and Large variants so should be stored in a different zone of the warehouse.

These product codes would also allow to have these variant follow different min/max replenishment templates...
