Azure SQL Database supports JSON data type natively from more than 1 year. The JSON type allows you to store JSON documents in a native binary format that is optimized for storage and query performance.
Why not adding JSON as an available data type for table fields in AL too?
There are lots of interesting scenarios where this can be useful (see my blog) and this will help also on performance aspects.
Please think on supporting this data type and its native SQL operators.
