In the Warehouse Management mobile app for Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, it is currently not possible to use a data inquiry (detour) to look up and return a value (e.g., Load ID) into a system grouping field.
This creates a limitation when using system grouping (e.g., Load ID) in combination with detour-based lookup scenarios, which are widely used for efficient warehouse operations.
Business Scenario
Warehouse workers need to perform picking based on a specific Load ID, where:
Work is grouped using system grouping = Load ID
A detour (data inquiry) is used to look up active loads
The worker selects the correct Load ID from the detour
The selected value should be returned automatically to the calling step
This flow is already a natural and supported design pattern in the mobile app — but currently does not work when combined with system grouping.
Current Limitation
Today, the system:
Does not support returning values from a detour into a system grouping field
Forces users to manually re-enter or scan the Load ID
Effectively requires entering the same value twice
Microsoft support has confirmed this as a functional limitation and product gap with no current fix available.
Business Impact
This limitation has significant operational impact:
Breaks system-driven picking flows
Introduces manual steps in otherwise automated processes
Increases risk of user errors (wrong Load ID)
Reduces warehouse efficiency and scanning accuracy
Makes system grouping unusable for load-based picking scenarios
As a result, customers must choose between:
Using system grouping (but losing lookup capability)
Or using manual entry (losing control, automation, and efficiency)
Expected Behavior
The system should support:
Using a detour (data inquiry) to look up values (e.g., Load ID)
Returning the selected value to:
The system grouping field, or
The corresponding input field in the main workflow
Allowing full integration between:
System grouping
Detours (lookup)
Paste-back / return values
Proposed Enhancement
Introduce support for:
Mapping a field from a detour result back to:
System grouping fields
Or input parameters used for grouping
Ensuring compatibility between:
Display Open Work List (system grouping)
Data Inquiry detours
Standardizing this as a supported pattern in WHS mobile flows
Why This Matters
This is a core warehouse scenario, especially in environments with:
Load-based outbound processes
High-volume picking operations
Automation and system-directed flows
Without this capability, customers are forced into workarounds that:
Degrade process quality
Reduce system adoption
Increase operational risk
