Column Layouts lets you define more than twelve columns but Overview only shows the first twelve. This prevents you having a column for each period and then a total at the end. The Account Schedule preview prints the extra columns but because its a portrait designed report it goes onto three pages.

The restriction is due to an array limit in the matrix page - this array should be increased to 50.

Most companies want to list each period as a column so they can see the trend and then have a total for the year. This requires 13 columns.
