The double entry method has gone through various changes. In the beginning, we called it Bookkeeping. The word Bookkeeping was correct because the function was to maintain the books manually. Technology automated the manual books to an electronic version. Accounting became the proper word to use for the function because we now track financial data. New Apps and new software development has now presented the function as Financial Systems Reporting.

We cannot use the word Bookkeeping in Accounting anymore. It is an obsolete word. Financial Systems now do more of the accounting functions than bookkeepers ever did or that accountants have been doing. In the near future, Financial Systems will probably do almost all the steps of the accounting cycle. Financial Systems Analysts or Accountants will focus on reviewing the performance of the company instead of the steps to the Financial Statements.

Microsoft needs to eliminate the word Bookkeeping from the training tools.
