At Medtronic, as at many manufacturing companies, we need to prototype manufacturing cells, manufacturing lines, etc. At a customer site, we need to consider how our products can be placed optimally into available spaces, e.g., how the various components of a surgical robot could be placed into an existing operating room. In the manufacturing world, this is done by creating "cardboard cities", i.e., scale models of the planned spaces. Creating cardboard cities is expensive and time-consuming.

In all these cases, we need to be able to place collateral (AR objects), either generic (such as a workbench) or specific (as in a 3D rendering of one or more products) into a virtual space that represents an actual company or customer site. Optimally, it would be good to generate some record of what the final arrangement looked like.
