When a user opens a Knowledge Article from the Knowledge Search results within Dynamics 365, the article is restricted to a narrow central third of the screen. This constrained viewing area significantly limits readability and forces excessive scrolling, especially for articles containing step‑by‑step instructions, tables, diagrams, or extended text.

The limited width impairs the user experience for agents who rely on Knowledge Search to quickly assess information while handling customer enquiries. The design does not take advantage of available horizontal space and creates inefficiencies in high‑volume operational environments.

Business Justification

1. Improved Readability & Usability

A wider content display improves comprehension, reduces scrolling, and increases the speed at which agents can scan and action article content.

2. Supports Complex Article Layouts

Knowledge Articles commonly include tables, screenshots, call‑out boxes, multi‑column layouts, and formatted instructions. These elements do not render well when compressed into a narrow column.

3. Operational Efficiency

Agents working in fast‑paced case‑handling environments need to compare data, view diagrams, and reference instructions quickly. A wider article pane reduces friction and enables more efficient interaction with guidance and process documentation.

4. Alignment with Full‑Screen Behaviour

While full‑screen mode exists, it requires an additional click and takes the user away from the case or workflow they are currently handling. Improving the default viewing area avoids unnecessary toggling.

Requested Enhancement

1. Increase the Default Article Display Width

Expand the article display beyond the current central third to a more usable content width. The preferred behaviour is 60–80% of the horizontal screen area, or a responsive layout that scales based on viewport size.

2. Introduce Responsive Layout Support

Knowledge Articles should adapt fluidly based on device type, screen resolution, and workspace layout.

3. Allow Optional Admin Configuration

Admins should be able to set:

  • Default article width (in px or %),
  • Whether width is fixed or responsive,
  • Minimum and maximum width thresholds.

4. Maintain Compatibility with Existing UI Components

Ensure that the expanded view:

  • Does not overlap or obscure the Knowledge Search panel,
  • Does not interfere with case or session tabs,
  • Remains accessible and adheres to WCAG standards.

This enhancement would significantly improve the agent experience by replacing the overly narrow central article pane with a modern, responsive, and efficient display area. It reduces the cognitive load on users, supports complex layouts, and improves productivity without requiring users to switch to full‑screen mode.
