I think some kind of “holiday” calendar for the approver would be useful. So when approver is not there, the substitute person would get the approval request directly. So no need for the administrator user to do the delegation or to wait the minimum 1 day that is given in setup.

It is strange that Microsoft has this auto delegate function in "Finance and operations" but not in "BC".
This improvement will be very useful without changing any workflow.

I have created 26 Workflows for a customer needs.
They ask me how we can automatically
delegate some approval user for a period a time without changing the Workflow
User approval setup and also for 15 Workflows user group. Because we have fixed
user code directly to respect per example 2 approvals for a journal entry.
Also, for some Workflow, we have directly
fixed a user to approve.
For all those kinds of approval setup,
the customer doesn’t want to modify a workflow for a period and impact the
process if there are some errors or forget to setup them back when the user is
coming back from a vacation per example.
This is not possible to manage all the
modifications each time someone is leaving temporarily. There is too much
modification on workflows for different steps.
It would be really appreciated for many customers
to be able to manage a Calendar for a user approval instead of modifying Workflow
steps.
This could be set for a period of time
to delegate automatically to their delegate user via a calendar workflow setup.

Approver substitute is needed. Simple reason keep work of Approval Administrators backlog.
And a sophisticated rule could be to intgerate the Microsoft Outlook Calendar and forward to substitute if Approver is Out of Office of any kind. Sickleave is another story to handle.

this is a good feature which all other workflow system have ,
the user do not usually choose to delegate to some one else , only when the approver is not there he can automatically delegate the record to some one he choose , or even based on holiday calendar
