In our experience as a partner, customers like to have a 'sandbox' company containing their own master data, which they can then transact/test in, before migrating to their 'live' company.

It would be great if, in the 'My Settings' page, there was an option to copy a company rather than just to create a new one (as there is in Dynamics NAV). This would allow setup to be completed, then the company duplicated in order to provide a 'sandbox' while keeping a clean setup company ready to go live.

Thanks!

I would expect that the copy would happen in a single transaction so that you would have an exact duplicate of the environment at that point in time.  This could be done after hours to ensure that other users are not impacted.

I would think advanced users(or partners) would like to have the integrations work so that testing can occur.  This would likely need to be set up by hand to avoid production integration problems.  The non technical users should not have this automatically done for them because they could cause serious issues with production information if they were not aware of how the sandbox concept works with these integrations.

Steve,

You are correct, in the Companies window there is an option to do Copy in the actions menu.  this will allow you to create a company by copying the company data you have selected into a new Company ID that you select.

thanks,

 Hi Kennie,

You're welcome, thanks for the reply. In answer to your question, I would expect that the consultant/implementer would disable the integration points. That being said, for anyone who is self-implementing, this may need to come with some sort of prompt/reminder!

I would expect this to happen in a single transaction and to lock the source company. It's normally a quick process so I wouldn't see this being an issue.

I actually had some feedback from a contact we have at Microsoft who informed me that this functionality is in fact already possible from within the 'Companies' menu in Dynamics 365 for Financials though, so perhaps the above is moot and I just missed it!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your input. A few questions (we have discussed this concept internally already)

In this sandbox company, would you expect all integration points to external systems to be disabled?

Would you expect the copy to happen in a single transaction, possibly locking the source company during the copy process?
