I suggest adding a standard Subcategory field directly below Item Category on the Item Card in Business Central.

Many companies do not need a complex category tree. They simply need one main category and one subcategory that are easy to maintain and easy to use in integrations, B2B portals, e-commerce, filtering, and navigation.

Example:

Item Category = Fashion

Subcategory = Hats

This would make item maintenance much more practical, reduce the need for custom development, and improve how product structures are used across connected systems.

This would be a very helpful standard improvement and should be a relatively simple enhancement for Microsoft to implement.
