The customer has created a number of custom reports and charts that users would like to be able to view on CRM dashboard, however they are unable to do due to the CRM restriction of 50000 records per report.

There are no hard limits on CRM report result numbers. There are timeout factors that come into play with both Online as well as On Premise but unless it is specifically written into the report to only return X results there is nothing on the reporting backend that will limit this. Online has a 2 minute hard timeout aspect that you will likely run into.
