In the Microsoft Sustainability Manager, emission factors can be mapped to reference data entities such as products. Additionally, a product hierarchy can be defined using Product Categories.

Currently, if a specific product does not have an associated emission factor, the system throws an error and no emissions are calculated. This can be problematic in cases where granular emission factor data is not available for all product levels.

Proposed Enhancement:

Implement fallback logic that supports hierarchical resolution in reference data mapping. If no emission factor is found for a specific product, the system should automatically check higher levels in the product hierarchy until a matching emission factor is found.

• Improves data coverage and robustness of sustainability reporting
• Supports more flexible and scalable modeling of product emissions, especially in complex supply chains with partial factor availability
