Several companies want the ability to communicate to Leads who are not associated with Contacts. Today, you cannot create a segment with leads, you cannot use a Marketing List in a Journey with leads because it only allows subscription lists (which must be contacts). Business Case: Use a Simple Email Journey for Leads (not associated with contacts).

This is a mission-critical issue for my organization. The tool is very limited if I can't create segments for Leads and Accounts.

Agree. We are facing the same issue, We want to create segments for Leads and Accounts, But it only allows for contacts.

This is a very important feature/need. The Marketing module is fantastic, but segmentation feels like a step backward when compared to the legacy marketing lists which allows users to target the Account, Contact, and Lead. The workaround using workflows/process to create 'marketing-only' contacts for leads is less than ideal.
