When you want to add a different activity through the "..." overflow in the social pane, it will open a new screen with the activity while the task and phone call will open a new and fancy quick form within the social pane. This is inconsistent plus opening a new screen does not match the idea of CRM2013 where pop-ups are limited.
Preferably, when you want to create an activity through the social pane, you want that all of these to open inside the social pane.
This issue is related to other issues where the mention the inability to edit the quick create forms inside the social pane.
