I created a mail template for leads. Then I open a lead, go to activities and choose 'Add new activity - email'. The 'New Email' window opens and the lead was inserted into the 'To'-field. When I click on 'Insert template' then I get a message

You must select a recipient or a regarding record that can be associated to an email template. ... Select a valid record type and try again.

So it's not clear for the System what type of entitty the recipient is to pre-filter the templates though the lead was inserted.

It's the same for contacts.

When you create an email template, you have to choose a email template type. Please ensure that you have an email template of type lead. After that - if the template still does not work - please reopen this issue with more details.
