The new feature was released to allow for partial location cycle counting in warehouse management. We wanted to use this feature to indicate a group of products via category hierarchy for counting.
The issue here is that the table join added "Product category assignment | Products | Category" is not currently supported. The graphical interface allows you to add the join, but there isn't supporting code on the backend that actually connects them. This is the case with a lot of "edit query" joins where they still need to be developed.

Three years since original post; is the status still the same?

Critical component to allow retail stores to only cycle count portions of the store. Currently, it is all items or needs to be done manually.

Enabling cycle count by categories is a key functionality for enabling WMS functionality in a store, since Retail Hierarchy is the key driver for retailers.
