Since the dynamic email content si quite limited (you cannot expose content from elements in your customer journey). We generate a content setting for every customer journey.
-> this allows us to dynamically display event information in the emails.
-> our content settings contain multiple fields to display in the marketing email -> this is a valid workaround.
---> on the other hand, it is not possible to add IF conditions to the fields of these content settings.

The last one is the easiest fix. Or implement support for Freemarker: http://freemarker.sourceforge.net/docs/index.html
