Currently the only way to control VAT through the API is to set defaults in 'API setup', but in some cases an override is needed.

For example, it might be that the VAT Product Posting Group or VAT Business Posting Group need to be changed. In some other cases, an override of the amount may need to take place, as can be done in BC via 'Statistics'.

Being able to call a GET on the VAT Posting Setup, will mean it is possible to check what codes should be used.
