It should be possible to import document management records along with file attachments for any data entity with a natural key present. This would be a generic solution, with the natural key stored on the document management record, and linked once in the target environment. This would allow any files to be migrated from legacy systems, and also allow files to be attached through integrations with third party systems, without the need to customise each data entity to which the file will be attached. Currently only a very small number of data entities are enabled to import file attachments, e.g. Products, Purchase order headers.

I am currently having to migrate Customer document attachments from their 2009 system to D365. This functionality is highly required.

I recently faced this issue where I had to upload files to the HR application inbox. I had to build a new data entity to do this.
