Currently there are a number of steps involved when personalizing a screen. In AX 2012, it seemed much easier to do - Columns could simply be dragged and the application remembered the position and sizing of the user settings. For some reason columns are also always added after the last field, but previously you could exactly position where the columns were to be added. In AX 2012 all this was intuitive, was intuitive but in D365 F&O it is anything but.
