Hi, I'm a Dynamics Community super user and encountered a gap in the integration between the Jobs module and the Sales module while working on a project involving job-related tasks. This issue shows in several ways:

1. Planning Line Item Quantity Not Recognized as Demand: When creating a planning line with a specified quantity of item, this quantity is not recognized as demand within Business Central. It doesn't appear as demand on the item card, nor does the planning worksheet account for it. Additionally, despite entering a quantity on the planning line, the quantity on the job order remains zero on item card. However, drilling into the planning line from the zero quantity does display the planning line, which is clearly an error.

2. Posting Sales Invoices Without Inventory: I was able to create and post a sales invoice linked to the planning line even when there was no inventory available. Surprisingly, Business Central did not display any error messages, despite the "Prevent Negative Inventory" setting being enabled in the Sales and Receivables setup.

3. Missing Item Ledger Entries After a posted Sales Shipment: After posting a sales invoice, which creates a posted sales shipment, no corresponding item ledger entries were created. This is one of the most unexpected issues encountered.

To address these issues, I recommend the following improvements:

  1. treat qty for an item on jobs planning line as a demand so BC will account for it when running planning worksheet or requisition worksheet.
  2. enable BC to check inventory level when create a sales invoice for the item on jobs planning line. If no sufficient qty is found, suggest if user wants to create a purchase order or production order manually
  3. show the qty on job order correctly on item card

Thanks

Thank you for reaching out,

Please explore the "Apply Usage" toggle in the Project Card (you can also configure it to be enabled by default in the Project Setup page). It will include planning lines into demand, allow reservation and warehouse handling. For more information, see https://learn.microsoft.com/dynamics365/business-central/projects-how-setup-jobs?tabs=current-experience

Behavior you see in 2 and 3 is by design. Project module separates sales from usage/consumption. Usage/consumption will result in the creation of item ledger entries. For more information, see Record Usage for Projects and Manage Project Supplies.
