Hello,

Currently, Business Central allows the consumption of a reserved component from production order A for production order B. This creates a situation where, at the moment of posting consumption for production order A, the user receives an error stating that the inventory previously reserved is no longer available in stock. During the process of consuming the component for production order B, the user does receive a message indicating that they are attempting to consume a component reserved for production order A, and after accepting this message, they are able to complete the operation.

Since the situation described above concerns one of our key clients, we reported the issue to Microsoft as urgent. However, they believe the system is functioning correctly and that this is essentially the cost of greater system flexibility. They argue that the user can still cancel the reservation and use a different component for production order A.

In our opinion (Nav24), this situation means that a reservation is not truly a reservation, because the system allows the consumption of a reserved component without requiring its cancellation. We would like to emphasize that if there are multiple users in the company, this effectively results in “stealing” the component, as the entire situation occurs without the knowledge of the user and the owner of production order A.

We would like to hear your opinion on this matter. Do you or your clients believe the system is functioning correctly and that reservations work properly in this case? How do you and your clients handle such situations in companies with multiple users performing these operations? Do you think Microsoft should make reservations stricter?

Below are the steps and settings required to reproduce the situation described above (images are not included, so the example is less detailed). We use three items:S00016 – Bicycle brake (rear)S00017 – Bicycle brake (front)W00008 – Bicycle brake (final product)Step 1: Item SetupOn the item card for S00017, the Reserve field is set to Always, so the system automatically reserves available inventory.Step 2: InventoryWarehouse PODSTAWOWY has 94 units of S00017.Step 3: First Prod. OrderCreate a Released Production Order for 94 units of W00008 and refresh. All 94 units of S00017 are reserved, confirmed in Reservation Entries.Step 4: Second Prod. OrderCreate another Released Prod. Order. No reservation for S00017 occurs because all units are already reserved.Step 5: Posting Without ReservationAssign lot/serial numbers and post consumption/output for the second order. A warning appears:“Reservation entries exist… Posting may result in negative inventory. Continue?”After confirmation, posting succeeds. The order shows 1 unit produced, and Item Ledger Entries confirm consumption.Step 6: Finish StatusChange the second order status to Finished; system confirms.Step 7: Impact on First OrderThe first order still shows reservations for 94 units, but only 93 units are available, and remaining quantity is 0. Despite reservations, inventory was consumed by the second order, making full execution of the first order impossible.
