I know there exists 'Show error message' however this makes field mandatory.
Business Use Case- At times, you would want to warn a user that a field is empty (not making it mandatory). Unless you code, there is no OOB way to show a message to the user alerting him that a field is empty.

What would be a useful function to go alongside this is the ability to use 'Now' functionality, for example display a warning if a date is greater or less than NOW().

This is a needed feature. I would like to have an alert that warns users when two calculated field values do not match, but with the current "show error message" option making fields mandatory, users have no way to update the values and re-save the form to force re-calculation of the fields. It's frustrating. We need the ability to give a warning or notice message WITHOUT it making the field mandatory.

I like this idea alot. I to ran into that issue as well when trying that feature, and was really looking more of a alert/warning. versus it making everything required.
