I had worked with Microsoft support team and they found this functionality wasn't available in current version of D365FO. They suggested to post this on this portal to get review.

This is regarding Project/Category Validation Functionality.

Let’s say our Project/Category validation ON/set Mandatory.

D365FO has ability to keep “Project ID” field at header level and which is good.[Expense report dedicated to one Project ID only]

Once user starts coding Expense Report and select project ID from the header, and an expectation was user could only see & select the categories “Category id” field based on Project/Category validation list. But found, this validation is not working and showing to you all categories and it’s a pain for user.

Your company has 100 expense categories and 2000 field users
Let’s assume how much time and pain they are facing to select the right Category for their expense report coding and get reimbursement because field/normal user would not aware all this high level of category validation.

If you run the scenario you can see this is not “Project/Category “Validation but it’s “Category/Project” validation.

Business process expectation is: User could see only categories in the list which assign to that project ID during validation setup.

The feature to show only the categories in the list that are assigned to a specific Project ID during validation setup is available in the product in builds 10.0.12 and later.
