On the Released product, for an MRO type item, it's great D365 gives you the ability to store vendor product information from Purchase > External item description. What would be nice though, is the ability to have a spot to store the manufacturer information, such as the actual manufacturer / manufacturer part number, you purchased from the vendor.

Same business scenario met within one biotech company.
They buy to a single vendor item made by different producers with different item codes and descriptions. Needs to specify teh relevant source during sales line creation.
Producer could be part of the composite key on External item Description table.

This manufacturer part number id is great idea and very required in many industries. There are also scenario, where item should have more than one manufacturer part number and one vendor may deliver this item from many different manufacturer. Information is relevant in the industry where is detailed audit trail requirements. It is not enough to know vendor and vendor part id - but also which is this item manufacturer id to get information what manufacturer item has used - if any issues coming for item.
This world situation (covid, war) organization has faced the situation, that vendors will provide same item in order - but from different manufacturer than origin agreement. There is not so many options for organization to reject optional manufacturer item these days - because original items are not possible to get. Organizations do not want to create new items to their Dynamics register, because in their point of view - item is still same even not original agreed from specific manufacturer.
Our customer has faced this situation hard in health industry and our solution should provide possibility to even change delivered manufacturer id in receipt/delivery phase (in picking, in advanced warehouse). They are /receipting/delivering same item, but origin manufacturer id is not possible to deliver - they should identify, that they deliver other manufacturer id (still same item number in D365).
