When you create variants against an item, there should be the option to force the user to select a variant. When variants exist it is usually the case that a variant must selected. The system needs a 'Item Variant Mandatory' that acts like the 'Location Mandatory' field but naturally only apples where Item variants exist for an item. Ideally this should be a global setting overridable on specific items.

Actually every customer who uses article variants has this requirement. This lack of functionality has already been criticized many times in Navision and Dynamics NAV. It would be nice if this functionality could finally be delivered as "standard" in BC.

With respect to managing rev levels in the semiconductor and medical device industry, this is a critical addition to a family of additions with respect to variant functionality in Business Central. We have a number of clients looking at BC but since it doesn't handle REV levels (variants) well, it's a problem.

Kevin,

It's not mandatory on either purchase or sales documents. You can quite happily post an item that has variants specified without ever populating the variant code. You can get around this to a point but not allowing the item to go negative in which case as you do not have stock of a blank variant but really if you set an item as having variants you really should have the option to force a variant to be specified.

It is already mandatory on purchase and sales documents, where is it not mandatory when variants exist?
