Merchants who sell internationally need their Harmonized System (HS) codes and Country of Origin to be accurately reflected in Shopify for customs declarations, duty calculations, and trade compliance. Today, the Shopify Connector reads the Country of Origin from Shopify but does not write it back, and does not sync HS codes at all.
We received customer inquiry to add support for synchronizing these fields between Business Central and Shopify.
What would change
- HS Code sync (to Shopify): The connector would send the Tariff No. from the Business Central Item card to Shopify's Harmonized System Code field on the inventory item (Shopify product). This would allow merchants to maintain their HS codes in Business Central and have them automatically reflected in Shopify for international shipping and duty calculation.
- Country of Origin sync (to Shopify): The connector would send the Country/Region of Origin from the Business Central Item card to Shopify. Today this field is only read from Shopify — the proposed change would make it bidirectional, so merchants who maintain origin data in Business Central no longer need to update it separately in Shopify.
- From Shopify: The connector would also read the HS code from Shopify and store it alongside the existing Country of Origin data, giving merchants visibility into Shopify's customs data directly from Business Central. Propagate Country of Origin and Tariff into Item Card.
To design this feature in a way that works best for your business, we'd love to hear from you on the following questions:
- Global HS code vs. country-specific HS codes? Shopify supports both a single global HS code and country-specific overrides (e.g., a different extended code for the US vs. the EU). Would syncing only the global HS code from the BC Tariff No. be sufficient for your needs, or do you also need country-specific HS code support? If so, how do you manage country-specific codes in Business Central today?
- Should this sync automatically or require opt-in? Would you prefer the connector to sync HS codes and Country of Origin by default whenever products are synced, or would you rather have a toggle on the Shopify Shop Card to enable/disable customs field synchronization separately?
- Where do you maintain your HS codes today? Do you manage HS codes primarily in Business Central (on the Item card's Tariff No. field), in Shopify, or in a third-party system? Understanding your current workflow helps us design the right sync direction and conflict handling.
