This is a very old request that goes back to the beginning of AX 2012 when the item type no longer indicated whether an item was make or buy but you had to go to default order parameters.
This created instant problems
(1) - I cannot easily filter on Make versus BUy items anymore. I need a join.
(2) - When I use item templates (and all customers do) it is no longer possible to create a MFG item from a template. The default order type is out of reach for the item template because that supporting table is not part of the template.

Number 2 is really disastrous and every customer has strongly objected to this, yet nothing was done.
