Having GTIN as the default for a Barcode is very limiting. First, to get an actual GTIN it costs $2500 for only 1000 items. Second, GTIN is numeric only. Third, there is no check logic to make sure the GTIN is unique and will cause errors when scanning. The GTIN field on the Item Card is the perfect place to add a simple barcode field, which could be the Default Barcode from the Item References. Also, as a setup, it would be great to default the Barcode to be your own Item No. or the Vendor Item No. with various Barcode font options.
When I read the Microsoft Learn on the new Print Barcode from Item Card frustration began when no barcode would print. After many hours of searching, nobody pointed out that the barcode label came from the GTIN. Since GTIN field is not shown by default on the Item Card, I confused Item Reference with GTIN. Also, GTIN is actually an item reference, so no need to have separate locations.
Also, since barcodes are absolutely necessary for Sales, Purchasing, & Inventory control, it should have a much larger role thru-out BC. There should be multiple Template options with printing so you can have various Label sizes to choose from.
