The EXCEL export option is available when on the BOM designer. It has three options. The third option makes sense.

The user expects that the third option "Export BOM LINES" would result in an EXCEL with all the BOM lines (multi level).

Nothing exports.

We suggest strongly that this feature will be actually working.

It is very common having a BOM in Excel for review and possible BOM Comparisons.

In the current implementation the OPEN IN EXCEL options in the BOM Designer are not filtering on the selected view / tree and are opening the entities without any filters, what typically may end in a timeout.

Thank you for your feedback. Currently this is not in our roadmap; however, we are tracking it and if we get more feedback and votes, we may consider it in the future.   Sincerely, PM, Microsoft

I expected this to be basic functionality on a Microsoft product and was very disappointed to see that we have to copy and paste BOMs into excel then deal with formatting, rather than having an export that works with multiple BOM levels.

This is a key requirement for any manufacturer and vital for those with complex BOMs. Industry standard is for the BOM level to be included to make the output easier to understand.
