In Saudi Arabia, the indirect tax implemented by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) is officially known as Value Added Tax (VAT). However, throughout Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, the standard terminology used in the application remains "Sales Tax".

Although the underlying tax engine correctly supports VAT calculations and Saudi localization requirements, the terminology presented to business users, accountants, finance managers, auditors, and implementation teams does not align with the terminology mandated by local regulations and commonly used across the Kingdom.

This creates unnecessary confusion during implementation, user training, daily operations, and audits.

Current Challenges

  • Users expect to see VAT, but the application displays Sales Tax.
  • Finance users frequently ask whether "Sales Tax" and "VAT" are different concepts.
  • Training materials must repeatedly explain that "Sales Tax" actually means "VAT".
  • Customer documentation and SOPs require additional clarification.
  • Reports, inquiries, menus, and setup screens use inconsistent terminology compared to local legislation.
  • Organizations often request costly customizations to rename labels.
  • Partners spend additional implementation effort explaining Microsoft's generic terminology instead of focusing on business processes.

Proposed Enhancement

For environments where the country/region is Saudi Arabia (SAU), Microsoft should provide a localization option that automatically replaces all user-facing instances of "Sales Tax" with "VAT" while keeping the underlying application logic, database structure, APIs, and object names unchanged.

This should be a display-level localization enhancement, not a functional redesign.
