I have an opportunity record with name "Interested in M9285"; When i invoke search "Look up M9285", it does not result any data. However, when i invoke search "Look up *M9285", it results in the Opportunity record.

Looks like the serach is not resulting in 'Contains' key word while searching for it. Wild cards (especially Post fix) result in heavy performance and is less discouraged for CRM searches.
