Leads are intended to be companies or individuals that you have no relationship with and are unqualified. Once a lead becomes qualified it should be converted to an account or contact. There is something wrong with the data if an existing account or contact needs to be converted to a lead as it suggests you have a relationship with them. If there's an existing relationship I would suggest that you create an opportunity for them and never a lead.

There is no way currently to add a lead from either the contact or account pages. This would be helpful and avoid duplicate data entry every time a lead is added to an existing relationship

Thank you for your feedback. This is not a common use case, and we are not planning to consider this at this point.

Just want to provide a counter-argument to @Jamsul, though the information and suggestion provided in that post are valid - thank you. In many orgs, there is a desire for a two-stage qualification process for each (or most) sales campaign(s). Put another way, some companies begin the sales process by targeting as "leads" known actors in the industry. Some of these will qualify to be pursued as opportunities, and some of these will be won or closed. One way this is described is the process to go from "suspects" (lead) to "prospects" (opty) to "sales/customers/clients/etc" (opty --> closed as won). The notion of a known suspect, or a known entity (Contact/Account) being brought into the motion as a new lead is not that uncommon in my experience.
