Similar to how when defining a new item the user can choose from several active number series, we would find significant benefit to be able to choose from several prevailing number series for item tracking when selecting the tracking number to be applied.

The above is a generic wording for a more specific use case as follows -

• We have multiple Items which are Serial Number tracked for the purposes of Servicing.
• These products are sold to customers which have a Health & Safety related obligation to have the hoses serviced regularly and be able to track the life-cycle of every instance if the Item.
• Each customer has a unique instance identity for each item using a numbering sequence.
• Managing the connection between a generic serial number and a separate identity is cumbersome.

By allowing the Number Series Line to be selected when assigning the item tracking number, similar to how can be done when creating an item, we could solve the problem with a simple and robust solution. The application user need only select the appropriate Number Series Line when assigning the serial number.

It can be argued that each customer could just track the generic serial number. However, there is a lot of industry inertia involved. Each customer is a distinct operator in the field and must be able to identifiy their instances of the item from that of another operator, making customer specific identifier a requirement. Implementing this as the serial number is the simplest operational solution.

The selection between lines may not be applicable for Lot Number selection, but we cannot find a justfication for the distinction. Item Tracking is Item Tracking.
