Got same issue when escalating an approval step in the workflow.

It should be escalated through the hierarchy, but started from the Workflow Item Owner.

Does anyone have any good work arounds for notifying assignees of their assignments other than (A) the project manager creating appointment/meetings for every booking and sending it to them, or (B) the assignee having a project account and also having to log in and check the boards?

This is a great suggestion. In situations where chargeable transactions are accruing revenue, the user should NOT be allowed to close the project without proper disposition of the transactions - either to invoice or to mark them as non-billable.

In addition to the suggestion above, please also consider the other validation associations. For resources and projects, project types and groups could be available. And, for resources and categories (as well as projects and categories), the ability to make associations at the category group would be helpful.
