Allow Administrators to Exclude, Clear, or Regenerate Custom Fields When Using Copy Opportunity
The new Copy Opportunity feature in Dynamics 365 Sales is an excellent addition and has significant potential to improve efficiency when creating repeat opportunities.
However, the current behaviour copies all custom fields from the source opportunity, including hidden fields and custom identifier fields. Many organisations use a custom, user-friendly Opportunity ID because the out-of-the-box Opportunity ID is not practical for day-to-day business referencing. As a result, copying an opportunity also copies the custom Opportunity ID, creating duplicate identifiers and preventing organisations from adopting the feature without additional automation.
We would like Microsoft to provide administrators with the ability to control field-level copy behaviour, including options to:
- Exclude selected custom fields from being copied.
- Clear selected fields on the newly created opportunity.
- Regenerate values for identifier fields during the copy process.
- Configure copy behaviour through a no-code administration setting.
This enhancement would improve data integrity, reduce reliance on custom Power Automate flows and plug-ins, and enable more organisations to adopt the Copy Opportunity feature in production environments.
Business Benefit:
Many Dynamics 365 Sales customers use custom identifier fields and integration-related fields that should not be inherited by a new opportunity. Providing field-level copy controls would make the feature more flexible, reduce implementation complexity, and significantly increase adoption of an otherwise highly valuable capability.
