It is a very common scenario:
Inventory is physically moved from one site to another (moving from warehouse on the east coast to warehouse on the west coast)
Freight cost is incurred during the move, and this cost needs to increase the inventory value.
There can be other charges such as duty and tariffs if the source and destination in different countries.
Right now there is no reasonable way to add the charges cost to the inventory value of the products moved (as can be done with purchase orders, using charges)
This is a MAJOR pain, and a repeated request.

It is a feature that has been requested since AX 2009. All companies that transport something require adding transportation costs (and other inventory handling costs) to the value of their inventory. It needs to be a global, not a local, feature.

It is a very common scenario, needed across regions !

It is obvious that this missing feature must be implemented ASAP (no proper workaround, "fake intercompany orders" are not efficient), It does not make sense having hundres of similar extensions out there to cover the frequent situation of freight charges on transfer orders.

Hello,
I agree with Zvika: "This is a MAJOR pain, and a repeated request."
In 1 year we had 2 customers that have the same requirement and we did customization in order to manage it.
BTW, it's very common usage in Africa where Auditors and Taxes Authorities have no problem with that.
Should not Microsoft also think to this emergent market, or to the European companies with a lot of African subsidiaries could use D365FO in next coming years? ;)

hello,
It is a need required by customer but it is not a good financial best practice when you are in the same Legal Entity.
Auditors and Taxes Authorities don't like that :-)
The business need is much more cost allocation that you can do at 3 levels with D365 :
- Finance : Distribution and Allocation
- Cost Sheet : If you want to allocate some transport cost linked to the production
But the most flexible solution is the Cost Accounting Module.

Hi Anders,
There is an almost identical suggestion at https://experience.dynamics.com/ideas/idea/?ideaid=4f799333-6c83-e811-9cca-0003ff68a6a2
Please can you take this into consideration. If it's not possible to merge the two ideas I would ask you to at least consider the combined votes and the fact that this has come up multiple times when Microsoft reviews whether this warrants inclusion on the product roadmap.
FYI, for the second time in 6 months I've just sat in a 2 hour meeting discussing how to workaround the lack of functionality in this area. This has been a gap for a long time now and so I'm rather hoping we won't have to wait long for a much needed solution.
Many thanks.

We have this exact same scenario --- transfer to a business unit/site. We need to capture the cost of the freight when we move items from warehouse to warehouse. This is especially true when using 3PLs and Standard costing. Long, long, long, overdue.
Category: Cost Management
This is a much needed functionality. Working an implementation currently that needs to add cost to the inventory item. We will have to customize this when it should be a standard feature.

Ideally this functionality could work both with TMS and without TMS. Most distribution companies have to add cost to their inventory as part of a transfer and also to reconcile carrier invoices. At the moment it is 1/2 of the accounting picture.

With the fall release 2017 we added new functionality with our transportation management module. This supports apportionment of charges to transfer orders. The charges assigned to transfer orders are not posted with this functionality, and it does not support markup of inventory. This functionality is for allocation the cost only in support of vendor invoice reconciliation of carrier invoices. While is does not help support inventory markup it does offer something in helping track carrier expenses relative to operations.

Thank you for your feedback. We addressed this issue as part of the functionality in the new Landed cost module introduced in the April 2021 release wave.
