Grouping by grid can be so useful, however, many times there is so much data that you can't make a proper assessment of the subtotals garnered by the grouping functionality.

If you could quickly collapse all of the groups to view subtotals, then expand those which meet your needs, that would greatly enhance the use of group by column feature!
